Yes, you can usually install Visio or Project on the same PC as Office, but only if the products are compatible with each other. Microsoft's rules depend on the version, the installation technology, the update channel and whether each product is 32-bit or 64-bit. This guide explains those rules in plain terms, shows which combinations work and how to add Visio or Project to an existing Office installation.
| Combination | Supported? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Apps + Visio LTSC Professional 2024 (volume) | Yes, with Microsoft 365 Apps Version 2408 or later | Both Click-to-Run, same version 16.0 |
| Microsoft 365 Apps + Project Standard 2021 (retail) | Yes, with Microsoft 365 Apps Version 2108 or later | Both Click-to-Run, same version 16.0 |
| Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 + Project Professional 2024 (volume) | Yes, on the PerpetualVL2024 channel | Same version, technology and channel |
| Office LTSC 2021 (volume) + Visio 2021 (retail) | No | Different update channels |
| Office Professional Plus 2019 (volume) + Visio Professional 2016 (volume MSI) | No, alternative available | Click-to-Run and MSI cannot mix |
| 64-bit Office + 32-bit Visio or Project | No | All products must match in bitness |
Can you install Visio and Project on the same PC as Office?
Yes, you can install Visio and Project on the same PC as Office when all three use the same installation technology, the same update channel and the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, and when they do not conflict as different Click-to-Run versions with overlapping apps, which are the conditions Microsoft sets out for supported combinations.
Microsoft documents these conditions in its guide to supported scenarios for installing different versions of Office, Visio and Project on the same computer. Most install failures come from breaking one of them, not from a faulty key.
What we commonly see in support is a buyer who installs Office from one source and Visio from another, then gets an error about the update channel or about products that cannot be installed together. The usual fix is to reinstall one product so that both match.
What are Microsoft's compatibility rules for Office, Visio and Project?
Microsoft's two main rules are that you cannot install two products with the same version but different installation technologies, and you cannot install two products of different versions if both use Click-to-Run and have overlapping Office apps, and it adds that all products must match in bitness and use the same update channel.
- Same version, same technology. Office 2016 to Office LTSC 2024 all share version 16.0, so a Click-to-Run product and an MSI product of that version cannot coexist.
- No overlapping Click-to-Run versions. Two different Click-to-Run versions of Office with the same apps cannot sit on one PC.
- Same bitness. Microsoft states you cannot install 32-bit Visio with 64-bit Office.
- Same update channel. Microsoft describes the update channel as a device-wide setting that all Office products, including Project and Visio, must share.
Rule four is the cause behind most retail and volume conflicts. Visio and Project do not overlap with Office apps, so different years can be combined in principle, but only if the channels line up.
Can you mix retail and volume versions of Office, Visio and Project?
Mixing retail and volume products often fails because volume suites are tied to their own update channel: Microsoft states that PerpetualVL2024 is the only channel available for Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 and Standard 2024, so a retail Visio or Project that uses a different channel cannot share that PC.
The same applies to Office LTSC 2021, which can only use PerpetualVL2021, and Office Professional Plus 2019, which can only use PerpetualVL2019. Volume Project and Visio, by contrast, can use either their PerpetualVL channel or a Microsoft 365 channel such as Current Channel, which is why they pair well with both LTSC Office and Microsoft 365 Apps.
The practical takeaway is to match key types. With our Office 2024 Pro Plus LTSC licence, choose a volume Project or Visio such as Project Professional 2024 LTSC. The product codes behind each edition are explained in our guide to Office product IDs for the Office Deployment Tool.
Can you install Visio or Project with Microsoft 365 Apps?
Yes, Microsoft supports installing Visio and Project 2024, 2021 and 2019, in retail or volume editions, alongside Microsoft 365 Apps, provided Microsoft 365 Apps is recent enough: Version 2408 or later for the 2024 products, Version 2108 or later for 2021, and Version 1808 or later for 2019.
Microsoft 365 Apps updates automatically, so most installations already meet these minimums. Volume Project and Visio must be configured to use the same update channel as Microsoft 365 Apps, such as Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel.
The advanced nuance concerns 2016. Volume Project 2016 and Visio 2016 normally install with MSI, which cannot sit alongside Click-to-Run Microsoft 365 Apps. Microsoft's workaround is to install them with the Office Deployment Tool, which uses Click-to-Run while keeping volume activation, although it needs a different MAK key from the MSI one.
How do you add Visio or Project to an existing Office installation?
To add Visio or Project to an existing Click-to-Run Office installation, use the Office Deployment Tool with a configuration file that names the Visio or Project product ID, the same update channel and the same bitness as your installed Office, then run setup with the /configure switch and activate the new product with its key.
- Check your installed Office in File > Account: note the version, the bitness (in About) and whether Update Options is shown, which indicates Click-to-Run.
- Download the Office Deployment Tool from Microsoft and extract it to a folder such as
C:\ODT. - Create a
configuration.xmlwith anAddelement that setsOfficeClientEditionto match your Office (32 or 64) and the matchingChannel, for examplePerpetualVL2024for Office LTSC 2024. - Inside it, add one
Productelement for the new app, for exampleVisioPro2024VolumeorProjectPro2024Volume, with your key inPIDKEYand the same language as Office. - Open Command Prompt as administrator in that folder and run
setup.exe /configure configuration.xml. - Open Visio or Project and confirm activation in File > Account.
If you use Microsoft 365 Apps, Microsoft notes that Version="MatchInstalled" in the configuration file lets you add Visio or Project without updating Office to a newer build, and the Channel attribute is then required. Detailed walkthroughs are in our Visio 2024 Professional install guide and Project 2024 Professional install guide.

What errors appear when versions are incompatible, and how do you fix them?
When products are incompatible, setup stops with a message that the products cannot be installed together, that the current update channel is not supported, or that a 64-bit or 32-bit version could not be installed, and the fix is to uninstall the mismatched product and reinstall it to match the other.
- Bitness error: Microsoft's article on the "Office (64-bit or 32-bit) couldn't be installed" error says to uninstall the version you do not want, including standalone apps such as Visio or Project, and reinstall with the bitness you need.
- Update channel error: usually a retail product meeting a volume suite. Replace the retail product with the volume edition, or reinstall everything on one channel.
- Click-to-Run and MSI error: Microsoft offers three paths: keep the MSI version, remove it and use Click-to-Run, or install volume Project or Visio 2016 with the Office Deployment Tool.
Uninstalling Office or Visio does not delete your files. If old entries remain after uninstalling, our guide to completely removing old Office covers the clean-up.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install Visio 2021 with Office 2024?
Often not cleanly. Both use Click-to-Run with version 16.0, but every product on the PC must share one update channel. Office LTSC 2024 can use only PerpetualVL2024, while volume Visio LTSC 2021 uses PerpetualVL2021 or a Microsoft 365 channel, so Visio LTSC 2024 is the safer match.
Can I install Project 2024 with Microsoft 365?
Yes. Microsoft supports Project 2024, in retail or volume editions, alongside Microsoft 365 Apps Version 2408 or later. A volume Project 2024 must be set to the same update channel as Microsoft 365 Apps, such as Current Channel, which you set in the Office Deployment Tool configuration file.
Why can't I install 32-bit Visio with 64-bit Office?
Microsoft requires every Office, Visio and Project product on one PC to use the same architecture, either 32-bit or 64-bit. If they differ, setup fails. Check your Office bitness in File > Account > About, then reinstall Visio with the same bitness, or reinstall both on one choice.
Do Visio and Project need a separate licence from Office?
Yes. Visio and Project are separate products that no edition of Office includes, so each needs its own licence key. The key must match the edition and licence channel you install, for example a volume key for VisioPro2024Volume, or activation fails even when the installation itself succeeds.
Can I install Visio 2016 alongside Office 2019?
Not with the usual MSI installer, because Office 2019 uses Click-to-Run and the same version number, so Microsoft does not support the mix. Microsoft offers an Office Deployment Tool method that installs volume Visio 2016 with Click-to-Run, but both products are now out of support.
