Windows error 0x800F0805 means the edition upgrade package is invalid. It appears when you try to move between Windows editions, typically Home to Pro, using a key or method Windows will not accept for that path. Using the correct upgrade route resolves it without reinstalling.
What causes 0x800F0805
Changing Windows edition is not the same as activating it. An edition change swaps out feature packages, and Windows only permits certain routes. This error means the route you attempted is not one of them.
The usual triggers:
- Using a full Pro licence key where an upgrade key is expected, or the reverse
- Attempting an unsupported downgrade, such as Pro to Home, which Windows does not offer through Settings
- A corrupted component store, so the upgrade package cannot be staged
- Enterprise or Education editions, which do not accept consumer upgrade paths
Step 1: Confirm your current and target edition
- Press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter
- Note the exact edition, for example Windows 11 Home
Supported consumer upgrade paths are Home to Pro, and Pro to Pro for Workstations. Downgrades are not supported in place and require a clean install.
Step 2: Use the correct upgrade route
For Home to Pro, enter the key under Activation rather than through any other installer.
- Open Settings, then System, then Activation
- Expand Upgrade your edition of Windows
- Click Change under Change product key
- Enter your upgrade key
- Windows stages the package, restarts once, and completes the upgrade

Step 3: Repair the component store
If the path is correct and the error persists, the package staging area is likely damaged.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator
- DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and let it finish, which can take fifteen minutes or more
- sfc /scannow
- Restart and retry the upgrade
Run DISM before SFC. SFC repairs from the component store, so if that store is damaged there is nothing clean to repair from.
Step 4: Check Windows Update is functioning
Edition upgrades pull packages through Windows Update. If it is disabled, the upgrade cannot complete.
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc and press Enter
- Confirm Windows Update is running and not set to Disabled
- Confirm Windows Modules Installer is set to Manual and can start
- Retry
Debloating scripts commonly disable both. If you have run one, re-enable them before trying again.
If you are trying to downgrade
Pro to Home is not supported in place, and no key or command will make it work. A clean install with the Home edition selected during setup is the only route. Back up first, since this erases the drive.

Is an upgrade key different from a full Pro key?
They activate the same edition, but an upgrade key is intended for a machine already running Home and applies the edition change through Settings. A full Pro key is intended for a fresh Pro installation. Using one where the other is expected can produce this error.
