Windows activation error 0xC004F213 means no product key could be found for the installed edition. Windows searched its licensing store for a key matching the edition currently running and found none. It appears most often after a reinstall or an edition change where the key was never re-entered.
What separates this from similar codes

The practical difference is small, and the remedies overlap. What matters is that nothing is broken, a key simply needs installing.
Step 1: Check the edition Windows thinks it is running
- Press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter
- Note the edition exactly
After an edition change, Windows may be running an edition you did not intend. If the edition is wrong, changing it back is easier than buying a key for it.
Step 2: Enter your product key
- Open Settings, System, Activation
- Expand Change product key and click Change
- Enter your 25-character key
- Click Next
Or from an administrator Command Prompt, run slmgr /ipk YOUR-KEY-HERE then slmgr /ato.
Step 3: Recover a digital licence instead
If this PC was activated before, you may not need a key at all.
- Open Settings, Accounts, and sign in with the Microsoft account used previously
- Return to Activation and click Troubleshoot
- Select this device from the list and activate
The digital licence lives on Microsoft's servers against your account, which is why it survives a wipe.
Step 4: Recover an OEM key from firmware
Machines that shipped with Windows store a key in the BIOS.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Type wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey
If a key appears, install it with slmgr /ipk. A blank result is normal for a self-built PC. Note the firmware key is for the edition the machine shipped with, so it will not activate a different edition.
Step 5: Rebuild the licensing store
If the key installs but the error returns, the store may be damaged.
- net stop sppsvc
- cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WSLicense
- ren tokens.dat tokens.bak
- net start sppsvc
- slmgr /rilc, restart, then reinstall the key

Frequently asked questions
Did a reinstall delete my key?
A clean install clears the key from the machine. If the licence was linked to a Microsoft account, it can be recovered by signing in. If not, the key must be entered again.
Can I find my old key on the PC?
Only if it is an OEM key stored in firmware, recoverable with the command in step 4. A retail key entered manually is not retrievable after a wipe.
Is Windows still usable?
Yes. It runs unactivated with a watermark and locked personalisation, and continues to receive security updates.
How is this different from 0xC004F014?
0xC004F014 means no key at all. 0xC004F213 means no key for this particular edition. Practically, both are resolved by installing the right key.
