How to download, install and activate

The setup takes a few steps and one online key check. Our Office 2016 Professional Plus installation guide walks through each one.

  1. Uninstall any newer Office or Microsoft 365 apps. Two Office versions on one PC often cause activation problems.
  2. Download the Office 2016 Professional Plus installer as explained in the guide.
  3. Run setup and choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version that matches your add-ins.
  4. Open Word, go to File, then Account, and enter your product key.
  5. Stay online until Office shows that the product is activated.

Choose 32-bit only if an old add-in requires it. Otherwise 64-bit handles large Excel files better because it can use more memory.

Office 2016, 2019 or 2024: which version should you choose?

Choose Office 2016 only when compatibility with an older system matters most. For everyday internet use, a supported version is the safer choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Office 2016 still supported by Microsoft?

No. Microsoft ended support for Office 2016 on 14 October 2025. The software still installs, activates and works normally. However, it no longer receives security fixes. For a PC that opens email attachments and internet files every day, we recommend Office 2024, which is supported until October 2029.

Does Office 2016 work on Windows 11?

Yes. Office 2016 Professional Plus installs and runs on Windows 11 and Windows 10. It also runs on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1, which is why some buyers choose it for older PCs. Remove any newer Office version first to avoid activation conflicts.

Can I transfer my Office 2016 key to another PC?

Yes. This is a retail licence, so it is not locked to the first PC's hardware. Uninstall Office 2016 from the old computer, then install and activate it on the new one. If online activation is refused after the move, email our support team for help.

Why would I buy Office 2016 instead of a newer version?

The main reasons are compatibility and older hardware. Some business add-ins, macros or line-of-business tools were built for Office 2016. Office 2016 also runs on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1, where newer Office versions do not install. For other cases, a newer version is better.
