Project 2021 reaches end of support on 13 October 2026. The program will keep working after that date, but Microsoft will release no more security updates. If you want updates until 9 October 2029, look at Project 2024 Standard LTSC.

How to download, install and activate Project 2021 Standard
Direct download: Project Standard 2021 disc image from Microsoft (English, .img). Mount the .img file in Windows (right-click, Mount) and run Setup.exe.
Installation takes a few minutes: download from the emailed link, run setup, then activate with your key. The steps match our Project 2021 installation and activation guide, which also applies to the Standard edition.
- Download the Project 2021 Standard installer from the link in your order email.
- Double-click the downloaded image file to mount it as a drive.
- Run setup.exe from that drive and let the installer complete.
- Start Project 2021 and choose to enter a product key when prompted.
- Paste the 25-character key and finish online activation.
Make sure the edition you install is Standard. A Standard key will not activate a Professional installation, because each key is tied to one edition.
Standard vs Professional for Project 2021
The Standard edition covers solo planning; Professional adds tools for shared resources and central servers. If you need any feature in the right-hand column, choose Project 2021 Professional instead.

Frequently asked questions
Is Project 2021 Standard good enough for a small business?
For most small teams with one planner, yes. Standard handles task links, deadlines, costs and resource assignments well. It becomes limiting when several managers share a pool of people, or when your company uses Project Server. In those cases the Professional edition, with Team Planner and server connection, is the better choice.
Can I use Project 2021 Standard on a Mac?
No. Project 2021 Standard is a Windows application, and Microsoft does not make a Mac version of Project desktop. You need a PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11. Some Mac owners use a Windows virtual machine, but that requires its own Windows licence and enough memory.
Is Microsoft Project included in Office 2021?
No. Project is a separate product and is not part of any Office 2021 suite. You can install Project 2021 beside Office 2021 on the same PC. Both programs should be the same bit version, 32-bit or 64-bit, or the installer will refuse to continue.
Does Project 2021 Standard include Project Online?
No. This is a desktop licence only. It saves plans as .mpp files on your PC or a shared drive. Project Online is a separate Microsoft subscription, and only the Professional desktop edition can connect to it. Standard users usually share plans as PDF or Excel exports.
