Microsoft ended support for Office 2019 on 14 October 2025, together with Office 2016, Project 2019 and Visio 2019. A year later, many PCs still run it, and most owners are asking the same thing: does it still work, is it safe, and what should replace it? This guide answers those questions and sets out the realistic upgrade options.
| Option | Licence model | Support | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Office 2019 | Perpetual (already owned) | Ended 14 October 2025 | Legacy add-ins, isolated PCs |
| Office 2024 (Home & Business or Professional Plus) | One-time purchase | Until October 2029 | Home users and small businesses |
| Office LTSC 2024 | One-time purchase, volume activation | Until October 2029 | Offices managing several PCs |
| Microsoft 365 | Subscription | Continuous while subscribed | Users who want monthly new features and cloud services |
When did Office 2019 support end?
Office 2019 support ended on 14 October 2025, when Microsoft stopped releasing security fixes, bug fixes and technical support for it, and the same date applied to Office 2016, Project 2016 and 2019, and Visio 2016 and 2019, while Office 2019 for Mac had already reached end of support in October 2023.
Office 2019 followed the Fixed Lifecycle Policy. According to Microsoft's Office 2019 lifecycle page, mainstream support ended in October 2023 and extended support ended in October 2025, so there is no further support phase left.
Office 2021 has since followed it: Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 reached end of support on 13 October 2026. That matters if you were thinking of moving from 2019 to 2021, because that step no longer gains you supported software.
Does Office 2019 still work after end of support?
Yes, Office 2019 still opens, edits and saves documents after end of support, and your licence and activation remain valid, because end of support does not switch the apps off, but Microsoft no longer fixes newly discovered security vulnerabilities or bugs and no longer offers technical support for it.
Microsoft's own end of support notice for Office 2016 and 2019 says the apps may continue to function, while recommending an upgrade. Reinstalling is also still possible if you have the original key and installer.
What we commonly see in support is the assumption that Office 2019 will show "Unlicensed Product" after the end date. It does not. That banner, if it appears, has other causes, such as a leftover trial or a second licence on the PC.
What are the risks of using Office 2019 now?
The main risk is unpatched security flaws: any vulnerability found in Word, Excel, Outlook or PowerPoint 2019 after October 2025 stays open, so a malicious attachment can exploit it, and Microsoft also states that connecting Office 2019 to Microsoft 365 services is no longer supported.
The cause and effect is direct. Office documents and email are among the most common ways that malware reaches a PC, so the apps that open those files are exactly the ones that need patches. Without them, your protection depends on Windows and your antivirus alone.
Connectivity is the second risk. Microsoft's page on Office versions and connectivity to Microsoft 365 services states that support for connecting Office 2019 and 2016 ended in October 2023. Older versions might still connect, but Microsoft warns they may lose newer features and run into performance or reliability problems over time.
The advanced nuance is that compliance standards in some industries require supported software. If your business is audited, running Office 2019 may be flagged even if it works perfectly.
What are your upgrade options from Office 2019?
You have three supported options: Office 2024, a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac supported until October 2029; Office LTSC 2024, a volume-licensed edition for businesses with several PCs, also supported until October 2029; or a Microsoft 365 subscription, which keeps receiving new features and security updates while you subscribe.
- Office 2024: the closest like-for-like replacement. Home & Business 2024 covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, and Professional Plus adds Access. Our Office 2024 Professional Plus for Windows key suits a single Windows PC.
- Office LTSC 2024: receives security and quality updates but no new features, which suits offices that value stability. It uses MAK or KMS activation.
- Microsoft 365: includes cloud storage and continuous feature updates, but it is a subscription, so you pay for as long as you use it.
Files move across without conversion, because Office 2019 and Office 2024 use the same .docx, .xlsx and .pptx formats. For a full side-by-side view of older versions, see our comparison of Office 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024, and for the newest change, our Office 2024 vs Office 2021 guide.

How do you upgrade from Office 2019 to Office 2024?
To upgrade from Office 2019 to Office 2024, uninstall Office 2019 first, restart the PC, install Office 2024 with the method that matches your key, and then activate it, because both versions use Click-to-Run with the same version number and overlapping apps, so Microsoft does not support them side by side.
- Note any add-ins, macros or custom templates you use, and back up your Outlook data if it is stored locally.
- Uninstall Office 2019 from Settings > Apps, or use the
Removeelement in the Office Deployment Tool for volume installs. - Restart the PC.
- Install Office 2024 using the installer or Office Deployment Tool method that matches your licence.
- Activate with your new product key and check File > Account.
Uninstalling Office does not delete your documents. If the old version refuses to uninstall cleanly, our guide to completely removing old Office covers the support tool and licence clean-up.
Can you keep using Office 2019 safely?
You can reduce the risk of keeping Office 2019 by using it on a PC that is up to date on a supported Windows version, running current antivirus, avoiding opening attachments from unknown senders in it, and limiting it to tasks that need it, such as a legacy add-in, but no setup makes it as safe as supported software.
- Keep Windows fully updated, so the operating system is patched even if Office is not.
- Leave Protected View on, so files from the internet and email open read-only first.
- Do not enable macros in documents you did not create.
- Consider moving email to a supported client and keeping Office 2019 for the one task that needs it.
If you are also running Windows 10, the operating system itself left support in October 2025. Our guide on Windows 10 end of support explains the options there.
What about Project 2019 and Visio 2019?
Project 2019 and Visio 2019 reached end of support on 14 October 2025, the same day as Office 2019, so they no longer receive security updates, and the supported replacements are Project 2024 and Visio LTSC 2024 as one-time purchases or the Project and Visio subscription plans.
Microsoft states that the desktop versions of Project and Visio share the same end of support dates as the Office suites of the same version. When you upgrade them, match the new Office version and installation type, because Office, Project and Visio on one PC must use the same update channel. Our guide to installing Visio and Project alongside Office explains the rules.
Frequently asked questions
Will Office 2019 stop working?
No. Office 2019 does not stop working after end of support, and it does not become unlicensed. You can keep opening and saving files. What stops is support: Microsoft no longer releases security fixes, bug fixes or technical help, so new vulnerabilities found after October 2025 are not patched.
Can I still activate Office 2019 after end of support?
Generally yes. End of support does not cancel existing licences, so a genuine Office 2019 key can still be used to install and activate the software. If online activation fails, phone activation is the usual fallback. Remember that a fresh installation will not receive any new security updates.
Is it worth buying Office 2019 today?
For most people, no, because Office 2019 no longer receives security updates and Office 2024 is supported until October 2029. Office 2019 can still make sense for a specific compatibility need, such as an add-in or business tool that was only tested with that version, ideally on an isolated PC.
Can I upgrade from Office 2019 to Office 2024 for free?
No. Office 2019 and Office 2024 are separate perpetual products, and there is no free upgrade path between them. You need a new Office 2024 licence or a Microsoft 365 subscription. Your existing documents, templates and most settings carry across, because both versions use the same file formats.
Does Office 2019 still work with Microsoft 365 services?
It may still connect, but Microsoft no longer supports connecting Office 2019 to Microsoft 365 services. That means newer features might not work and you may see performance or reliability problems over time. Microsoft recommends moving to a version that is supported for those services.
