Windows 10 Home installs from a free Microsoft ISO and activates with a 25-character product key entered under Settings. Installation takes roughly 20 to 45 minutes and activation takes seconds. Windows 10 is also the right choice for hardware that cannot run Windows 11, which is the main reason people arrive at this guide.
Should you install Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Answer this before you buy a key, because it decides everything else.
Windows 10 reached the end of mainstream Microsoft support in October 2025. It still runs, still activates, and still receives Extended Security Updates on eligible devices, but it is no longer the current release. Choose Windows 10 Home when:
- Your PC fails the Windows 11 hardware check, usually on TPM 2.0 or an unsupported processor
- You are running older software or peripherals with drivers that were never updated for Windows 11
- You want a local account without workarounds, which Windows 11 Home no longer permits during setup
- You prefer the Windows 10 interface and do not need Windows 11 features
Choose Windows 11 Home instead if the machine qualifies. On supported hardware there is no good reason to install an older release. Run Microsoft's free PC Health Check app to settle it in one click.
Windows 10 Home system requirements
These are modest, which is the point. Windows 10 runs on hardware Windows 11 refuses.
- Processor: 1 GHz or faster, 32-bit or 64-bit
- RAM: 2 GB for 64-bit, 1 GB for 32-bit
- Storage: 32 GB or more
- Graphics: DirectX 9 or later with a WDDM 1.0 driver
- Display: 800 x 600 minimum
- No TPM requirement and no Secure Boot requirement
In practice, 4 GB of RAM and an SSD make the difference between a machine that feels usable and one that does not, regardless of what the minimum says.
Step 1: Download the Windows 10 ISO
Installation media is free from Microsoft. You are paying for the licence, not the file. Do not use third-party mirrors or torrents for a Windows ISO. Modified images are a well-known malware route and there is no reason to take the risk when the official download costs nothing.
- Go to Microsoft's Windows 10 download page
- Download the Media Creation Tool, or select the ISO directly
- Run the tool and choose Create installation media for another PC
- Select your language, choose Windows 10 as the edition, and pick 64-bit unless you specifically need 32-bit
- Choose USB flash drive and select an empty drive of 8 GB or larger
The tool erases the USB drive completely. The download is around 4 to 5 GB.
One note on architecture: 32-bit Windows 10 cannot address more than 4 GB of RAM. If the PC has 4 GB or more, install 64-bit. Almost every machine made in the last decade supports it.
Step 2: Install Windows 10 Home
Upgrading an existing Windows installation
- Open the mounted ISO and run setup.exe from within Windows
- Choose Keep personal files and apps
- Let the installer run. The PC restarts several times
- Sign in when it finishes. Your files and programs remain in place
Clean install on a new or wiped PC
- Insert the bootable USB and restart
- Press the boot menu key during startup, usually F12, F10, F2 or Esc depending on manufacturer
- Boot from the USB drive
- Choose language, time format and keyboard layout, then click Install now
- Enter your product key, or choose the option stating you do not have one to activate later
- Select Windows 10 Home as the edition. It must match your key
- Choose Custom: Install Windows only
- Select the target partition and continue
Edition selection at step 6 is where most activation problems begin. A Home key will not activate a Pro installation. If you select the wrong edition you can change it later in Settings without reinstalling, but it is far simpler to choose correctly now.
Setting up with a local account
Unlike Windows 11 Home, Windows 10 Home still lets you create a local account during setup. When the installer asks you to sign in, look for the option to create an offline or domain account rather than a Microsoft account. This is a genuine advantage of Windows 10 for anyone who does not want their PC tied to a Microsoft login.
Step 3: Activate Windows 10 Home
- Open Settings
- Go to Update and Security, then Activation
- Click Change product key
- Enter your 25-character key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
- Click Next
Note that the Activation page sits under Update and Security in Windows 10, not under System as it does in Windows 11. That difference trips up people following a Windows 11 guide by mistake.
Windows contacts Microsoft's activation servers and confirms within seconds. If you signed in with a Microsoft account, the licence is stored as a digital entitlement against that account and will reactivate automatically after a reinstall on the same hardware.
Retail vs OEM: which key did you buy?
| Feature | Retail | OEM |
|---|---|---|
| Transferable to a new PC | Yes | No |
| Tied to | Your Microsoft account | The motherboard |
| Survives a reinstall | Yes | Yes, same hardware |
| Survives a motherboard swap | Yes | No |
For a refurbished or fixed-spec machine, the OEM key is the economical choice. If you expect to move the licence to another PC later, take the Retail licence.
Common activation errors and what they mean
Error 0xC004F050
The product key did not work. Almost always an edition mismatch between the key and the installed version. Check Settings, System, About to confirm whether you are running Home or Pro.
Error 0xC004C003
The activation server determined the key is blocked, meaning it has exceeded its activation count or been revoked. Contact our support team if you bought the key from us.
Error 0x803F7001
Windows cannot find a licence for this device, commonly seen after a clean install on a PC that previously had a digital entitlement. Sign in with the Microsoft account the licence is linked to, then run the Activation Troubleshooter under Settings, Update and Security, Activation.
Error 0x8007232B
DNS name does not exist. This appears when a retail key is entered into an installation expecting volume activation, or when the PC cannot reach Microsoft's activation servers. Check your internet connection first, then confirm the edition matches.
What Windows 10 Home does not include
Home covers ordinary personal and student use. The Pro-only features are:
- BitLocker drive encryption, for protecting data on a laptop
- Remote Desktop hosting. Home can connect out, but cannot accept incoming connections
- Hyper-V virtualisation, for running virtual machines
- Domain join and Group Policy, for business networks
- Windows Update for Business, for deferring updates
If you discover you need these after installing, you do not have to start over. A Home to Pro upgrade key unlocks them through Settings in minutes with no data loss and no reinstall. Browse everything in the Windows licence key collection.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windows 10 still usable now that support has ended?
Yes. Windows 10 continues to run and activate normally. Mainstream support ended in October 2025, so it no longer receives feature updates, and security updates depend on Extended Security Update eligibility. For a machine that cannot run Windows 11, it remains the practical option. [VERIFY: confirm current ESU terms before publishing]
Is the Windows 10 download free?
Yes. Microsoft provides the ISO and Media Creation Tool free of charge. The product key is the paid component.
Can I install Windows 10 without a product key?
Yes. Windows installs and runs unactivated, with a desktop watermark, locked personalisation settings, and periodic reminders. Enter a key later under Settings, Update and Security, Activation.
Will my key work in my country?
Our Windows keys are global licences with no regional restriction. They activate through Microsoft's servers from anywhere in the world and support all installation languages.
Can I upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 11 later?
If your hardware meets the Windows 11 requirements, yes, though it requires a Windows 11 licence rather than an in-place edition change. Check compatibility with the PC Health Check app first, then see our Windows 11 Home guide.
Should I install 32-bit or 64-bit?
64-bit, unless you have a specific reason not to. 32-bit cannot use more than 4 GB of RAM and is only relevant for very old hardware or legacy 16-bit software.
