Windows 11 Home installs from a free Microsoft ISO and activates with a 25-character product key entered under Settings. The whole process takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes on modern hardware, and activation itself takes seconds. This guide covers the Home edition specifically, including the two requirements that catch Home users out and do not apply to Pro.
Before you start: three things to check
Most failed Windows 11 installations fail before anyone downloads anything. Check these first.
1. Does your PC meet the hardware requirements?
Windows 11 has stricter requirements than any previous Windows release, and the two that block most machines are TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot. Your PC needs:
- A 64-bit processor, 1 GHz or faster, with 2 or more cores (broadly Intel 8th generation or newer, AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer)
- 4 GB RAM minimum
- 64 GB storage
- TPM 2.0 enabled
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability
- A DirectX 12 compatible graphics card
Run Microsoft's free PC Health Check app before you buy anything. It tells you in one click whether the machine qualifies, and if it reports a TPM problem, that is often a BIOS setting rather than missing hardware. Many PCs ship with TPM disabled. Look for a setting called TPM, PTT (Intel Platform Trust Technology) or fTPM (AMD) in your BIOS and enable it.
If your PC genuinely does not qualify, Windows 10 Home supports a far wider range of older hardware and is the sensible alternative.
2. Home requires a Microsoft account
This is the single biggest difference between setting up Home and setting up Pro, and it surprises people. Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. You cannot complete a clean install of Home with a local account through the normal setup flow. Windows 11 Pro still allows a local account.
If a local-only account matters to you, that is a genuine reason to choose Windows 11 Pro over Home rather than a minor preference.
3. Back up your files
A clean install erases the target drive. An in-place upgrade usually preserves files, but usually is not a backup. Copy anything you care about to an external drive or cloud storage first.
Step 1: Download the Windows 11 ISO
The installation media is free and comes directly from Microsoft. You are paying for the licence, not the download. Never download a Windows ISO from a third-party mirror or torrent; modified ISOs are a common malware vector and there is no reason to use one when the official file is free.
- Go to Microsoft's Windows 11 download page
- Choose one of the three options: the Installation Assistant (upgrades the PC you are on), the Media Creation Tool (builds a bootable USB), or the direct ISO download
- For a clean install on a new machine, use the Media Creation Tool and an empty USB drive of 8 GB or larger
- Select your language and edition when prompted, and let the tool write the drive
The download is roughly 5 to 6 GB, so allow time on a slower connection. Note that the Media Creation Tool erases the USB drive completely.
Step 2: Install Windows 11 Home
There are two routes depending on your situation.
Upgrading an existing Windows installation
- Run the Installation Assistant, or open the mounted ISO and run setup.exe
- Choose Keep personal files and apps when prompted
- Let it run. The PC restarts several times
- Sign in when it completes. Your files and programs are intact
Clean install on a new or wiped PC
- Insert the bootable USB and restart the PC
- Press the boot menu key during startup, usually F12, F10, F2 or Esc depending on manufacturer
- Select the USB drive to boot from
- Choose your language, time and keyboard layout
- Click Install now
- When asked for a product key, enter it now or click I do not have a product key and activate later
- Select Windows 11 Home as the edition. This must match the key you bought
- Choose Custom: Install Windows only for a clean install
- Select the target drive and continue
Selecting the wrong edition at step 7 is a common cause of the key does not work complaints we see. A Home key will not activate a Pro installation and the reverse is also true. If you pick the wrong one you do not need to reinstall, since you can change edition later in Settings, but it is simpler to get it right during setup.
Step 3: Activate Windows 11 Home
Activation takes under a minute once Windows is installed.
- Open Settings
- Go to System, then Activation
- Expand Change product key and click Change
- Type your 25-character key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
- Click Next
Windows contacts Microsoft's activation servers and confirms within seconds. The Activation page should then read that Windows is activated with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account.
That last phrase matters. Once activated, the licence is tied to your Microsoft account as a digital entitlement, which means that if you reinstall Windows on the same hardware later it reactivates automatically without re-entering the key. Worth signing in with the same account after any reinstall.
Retail vs OEM: which key did you buy?
Both activate identically. The difference only matters later.

If you expect to rebuild or replace the machine, the Retail licence is worth the difference. For a fixed build that will not change motherboard, the OEM key does the same job for less.
Common activation errors and what they actually mean
Most activation failures are not bad keys. In practice, these four account for the majority of cases.
Error 0xC004F050
Reported as the product key you entered did not work. Nearly always an edition mismatch: you are running Windows 11 Pro and entering a Home key, or the reverse. Check your edition under Settings, System, About, and confirm it matches what you bought.
Error 0xC004C003
The activation server determined the key is blocked. The key has been used more times than the licence allows, or it has been revoked. If you bought from us, contact support. This is what the warranty covers.
Error 0x803FA067
Activation failure after a hardware change. Replacing a motherboard breaks the hardware ID the licence was bound to. For a Retail licence, run the Activation Troubleshooter under Settings, System, Activation and choose the option confirming you changed hardware recently. Sign in with the Microsoft account the licence is linked to and reactivate. This will not work for an OEM key.
Windows is activated but features are missing
You are on Home and looking for a Pro feature. BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V and Group Policy are Pro-only. You do not need to reinstall. An upgrade key unlocks them through Settings in a few minutes with no data loss.
What Home does not include
Worth knowing before you buy, since it is the most common reason people end up buying twice. Windows 11 Home covers everything most people need, including Snap Layouts, DirectStorage, Windows Hello, Auto HDR and the Microsoft Store. It does not include:
- BitLocker drive encryption, relevant if you carry a laptop with sensitive files
- Remote Desktop hosting. You can connect out from Home, but not in to it
- Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox, for virtual machines and isolated testing
- Domain join, Group Policy and Azure AD, the corporate network features
- Local account setup, since Home requires a Microsoft account as covered above

Can I install Windows 11 Home without a product key?
Yes. Choose the option stating you do not have a product key during setup and Windows installs unactivated. You can enter a key any time afterwards under Settings, System, Activation.
Will my key work in my country?

Does Windows 11 Home get security updates?
Yes. Home receives the same security updates as Pro. The difference is that Pro adds Windows Update for Business, which lets you defer and schedule updates. Home installs them automatically.
