It appears almost exclusively on machines using a volume KMS client key, which look for an activation server on the local network rather than contacting Microsoft directly. If you bought a single retail key, seeing this code usually means the key is not the type you expected.
What this error is really telling you
A KMS client key does not activate against Microsoft. It performs a DNS lookup for a service record identifying the Key Management Service host inside an organisation, then activates against that server. Two things can break:
- The PC has no working DNS server configured at all
- DNS works, but no KMS host record exists to find, because the network has no KMS server
The second case is the common one, and it is not a network fault. It means the key needs infrastructure that is not there.
Step 1: Confirm which key type you have
Do this before anything else. It determines whether this is fixable on your machine.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Type slmgr /dli and press Enter
If the description says VOLUME_KMSCLIENT, the key expects a KMS server. If it says RETAIL, OEM_DM or VOLUME_MAK, it should activate directly and something else is wrong, covered further down.
If you are on a business network with a KMS server
Check DNS is working and the host is reachable.
- Test DNS: nslookup yourdomain.com. If this fails, the problem is network configuration, not activation
- Look for the KMS service record: nslookup -type=srv _vlmcs._tcp.yourdomain.com
- If a host is returned but activation still fails, set it manually: slmgr /skms kmsserver.yourdomain.com:1688
- Activate: slmgr /ato
- Confirm port 1688 is open between the client and the host
If step 2 returns nothing, the domain has no KMS host published. Speak to whoever runs your IT before going further.
If you are on a home PC
There is no KMS server on a home network and there never will be. A KMS client key cannot activate here, regardless of DNS settings. No command will change that.
What usually happened is that the key was sold as a cheap volume licence without explaining that it only works inside an organisation running its own activation infrastructure. Some sellers point buyers at a public KMS host to activate against, which is neither legitimate nor stable, and activation typically lapses after 180 days.

If your key is retail and you still see this code
Less common, but it happens when a previous KMS configuration is still cached.
- Clear the stored KMS host: slmgr /ckms
- Uninstall the current key: slmgr /upk
- Clear it from the registry: slmgr /cpky
- Install your retail key: slmgr /ipk YOUR-KEY-HERE
- Activate: slmgr /ato
Also check basic DNS. Open Settings, Network and Internet, and confirm the adapter has a DNS server set, either automatically from your router or manually. A public resolver such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 is a reasonable test.

Can I fix 0x8007267C by changing my DNS settings?
Only if DNS is genuinely broken. If the underlying problem is a KMS client key on a network with no KMS host, changing DNS servers will not help, because there is no record to find.
What is the difference between a KMS key and a MAK key?
A KMS client key activates against a local server and renews periodically. A MAK key activates directly against Microsoft a fixed number of times and does not need renewal. MAK keys work on standalone machines; KMS client keys do not.
Why does activation keep expiring after I activate against a public KMS host?
KMS activation is time-limited by design and must renew against the same host. Public hosts advertised online are unreliable and are not a legitimate activation route. When the host disappears, activation lapses.
