How to Check if Microsoft Office Is Activated (and Find Your Product Key) – LicenceHouse guide

Office can look perfectly normal for days before an activation problem shows up as a red banner or a locked Save button. This guide shows how to confirm activation properly on Windows and Mac, how to read Microsoft's own licence report, and where your product key actually lives.

How do I check if Microsoft Office is activated?

The quickest check is to open Word or Excel, select File, then Account, and read the Product Information panel: an activated copy shows the product name without any red "Activation required" or "Unlicensed Product" warning, and for a definitive answer on Windows you can run Microsoft's ospp.vbs script with the /dstatus option.

The Account page also shows the exact edition, for example Office Professional Plus 2024 or Office Home and Business 2024. If the name there does not match what you bought, you have probably installed the wrong package, which is a common cause of activation failure.

One nuance: older versions such as Office 2019 printed a clear "Product Activated" line, but some newer builds do not show that text at all. In those builds the absence of any activation banner, combined with full editing, is the visual sign of a licensed copy, and the command-line check below removes any doubt.

What does "Unlicensed Product" mean in Office?

"Unlicensed Product" in the Office title bar means the apps could not find a valid, activated licence on the device, so Microsoft switches most editing features off until activation succeeds; the usual causes are an unredeemed key, two copies of Office installed, the wrong account or a key for another edition.

Microsoft's support article on Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office lists these causes along with incorrect date and time settings, firewall interference and proxy settings. Multiple installed versions are worth checking first, because two licences competing on one PC create confusing results.

What we commonly see in support is a PC that came with a trial or an older Office version still installed alongside the new one. Removing the old suite first, as covered in our guide to completely uninstalling old Office, usually clears the conflict before any key is touched.

How do I check Office activation with ospp.vbs /dstatus?

Open Command Prompt as administrator, change to the Office16 folder inside your Office installation, and run cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus, which lists every installed Office licence with its name, channel, licence status and the last five characters of the product key.

The folder depends on how Office was installed and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Microsoft's documentation on tools to manage volume activation of Office gives these locations:

Office and Windows combination Typical ospp.vbs folder
64-bit Office on 64-bit Windows C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16 or ...\Microsoft Office\root\Office16
32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16 or ...\Microsoft Office\root\Office16
32-bit Office on 32-bit Windows C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16

Office 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024 all use the Office16 folder name, so the version number in the path does not tell you which release is installed. Follow these steps:

  1. Search the Start menu for Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Type cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16" and press Enter (adjust the path from the table if the folder is not found).
  3. Type cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus and press Enter.
  4. Read the block for each licence, starting with LICENSE NAME and ending with the last five characters of the key.

If you see "Input Error" or "file not found", you are in the wrong folder, so try the other path. Note that ospp.vbs is designed for perpetual and volume versions; Microsoft states it does not work for Microsoft 365 Apps subscriptions, which use a different diagnostic script.

How do I read the LICENSE STATUS lines in the output?

The LICENSE STATUS line is the verdict: ---LICENSED--- means that licence is activated and in good standing, while a notifications or grace status means Office is running without completed activation, and the ERROR CODE and ERROR DESCRIPTION lines underneath explain why.

Look at LICENSE NAME and LICENSE DESCRIPTION together. LICENSE NAME carries the edition name, and LICENSE DESCRIPTION names the channel the key belongs to.

Channel shown in LICENSE DESCRIPTION What it means
RETAIL Activated with a retail key, the type sold for individual devices
RETAIL(Grace) A temporary grace licence; Office is not yet activated
VOLUME_MAK Activated once against Microsoft with a Multiple Activation Key
VOLUME_KMSCLIENT Relies on a Key Management Service host that must be reachable on a network
TIMEBASED_SUB A subscription licence, as used by Microsoft 365

If more than one licence block appears, Office has several licences installed. Old keys left behind by a previous install are a frequent reason for an "Unlicensed Product" message even after a new key was entered.

How can I tell if Office was activated with KMS?

A KMS-activated copy shows VOLUME_KMSCLIENT in the LICENSE DESCRIPTION line of the ospp.vbs report, usually with KMS host, activation interval and renewal interval details beneath it; because legitimate KMS activation needs an organisation's own KMS host, this line on a home PC is a warning sign.

Here is the cause and effect. According to Microsoft's article on activating Office by using KMS, a KMS client stays licensed for 180 days and tries to renew with its host every seven days by default; if it cannot reach a host, Office eventually falls out of the licensed state.

That is why unofficial "activators" are a problem: they imitate a KMS host, the copy looks activated for a while, and then it fails or keeps calling an unknown server. Our article on Office crack and KMS activator risks explains the security side. A genuine retail key shows RETAIL with LICENSED status and does not depend on any host.

What do the last five characters of the product key mean?

The "Last 5 characters of installed product key" line identifies which key is installed on the device without revealing the whole key, so you can compare those five characters with the key in your order email to confirm Office is using the key you bought.

The same five characters are used to remove a key. Microsoft documents cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXX to uninstall an installed key using its last five characters, and /inpkey: followed by a full key to install a replacement, then /act to activate.

A practical nuance: volume editions of Office come with a pre-installed Generic Volume License Key (GVLK) for KMS environments. If the five characters do not match your purchased key and the channel says VOLUME_KMSCLIENT, Office is still using that generic key and your own key has not been applied.

Can I find my full Office product key from the installed software?

Not dependably, because Microsoft's own tools, including File > Account and ospp.vbs, display only the last five characters of an installed Office key, so you should keep the original key from your purchase and check your Microsoft account if the key was redeemed there.

Where your key actually lives depends on how you bought it:

  • Keys bought from LicenceHouse arrive in your order confirmation email; store that email or copy the key into a password manager.
  • Keys redeemed to a Microsoft account (consumer editions such as Home and Business) appear under Services & subscriptions, where Microsoft shows a View product key option for listed products.
  • Volume or LTSC keys are not linked to a personal Microsoft account, so the original email is the only copy.

Third-party "key finder" tools often return a generic or partial key for modern Office. Treat any result from them as unreliable and use your purchase record instead.

How do I check activation in Office for Mac?

On a Mac, open Word, choose Word in the top menu bar, then About Word, where the dialog shows the version number and licence type, while an unactivated copy typically displays an activation prompt or an "Unlicensed Product" message and restricts editing until you sign in.

Office for Mac activates by signing in rather than by typing a key into the app, so the ospp.vbs method does not apply. For Mac installation and licence clean-up steps, see our guide to installing and activating Office 2024 for Mac.

What should I do if Office is not activated?

First confirm the edition in File > Account matches the key you bought, then remove any older Office versions and stale keys, enter your key again and activate online, using phone activation as the fallback if online activation fails on Windows.

  1. Check the edition name and compare it with your order email.
  2. Run ospp.vbs /dstatus and note any licences that are not yours.
  3. Remove unwanted keys with /unpkey: and their last five characters.
  4. Install your key with /inpkey:, or use Change Product Key in File > Account, then activate.
  5. If online activation is refused, follow our guide to activating Office by phone.

Every key we sell includes a 30-day warranty and activation help from support@licencehouse.com. Sending us a screenshot of the /dstatus output, with the key characters visible, makes diagnosis much faster. If you still need a licence, our Office 2024 collection lists the current editions.

Frequently asked questions

Does Office stop working completely if it is not activated?

Not immediately. Unactivated Office shows warnings and moves into a reduced-functionality mode in which most editing features are disabled, although you can usually still open and view documents. Because the change can be gradual, the ability to edit today is not proof of activation, so check the licence status directly.

Why does ospp.vbs show no licence information?

This usually means you ran the script from the wrong Office installation folder, or the installed Office is a Microsoft 365 subscription build that ospp.vbs does not report on. Try both the Office16 and root\Office16 paths for your 32-bit or 64-bit version before assuming that no key is installed.

Can I see which Microsoft account activated my Office?

For consumer editions activated by signing in, File > Account shows the signed-in user, and the licence also appears under Services & subscriptions on that Microsoft account. Volume and LTSC editions activated with a key are not tied to a personal account, so the ospp.vbs report is the reference for those.

Does a VOLUME_KMSCLIENT licence mean Office is pirated?

No. Businesses with a volume licensing agreement legitimately run their own KMS host, and their PCs correctly show VOLUME_KMSCLIENT. It becomes a concern on personal or small-business PCs that have no organisational KMS host, because that usually points to an unofficial activator rather than a genuine licence.

Do I need to keep my product key after Office is activated?

Yes, keep it. You may need the key again after reinstalling Windows, replacing hardware or moving Office to another PC where the licence terms allow it. Since installed Office only shows the last five characters, your purchase email is often the only full copy available.
