Windows upgrade error 0xC004C4A2 means licence validation failed while changing Windows edition. The upgrade began, Windows asked the activation server to validate the new edition licence, and the server declined. It appears most often during a Home to Pro upgrade.
What causes 0xC004C4A2
An edition upgrade involves two things happening together: Windows swaps in the feature packages for the new edition, and the licence for that edition is validated. This code means the second half failed.
Common causes:
- The upgrade key has already been used on another machine and has no remaining entitlement
- Server-side validation was interrupted mid-upgrade by a network problem
- The key does not match the target edition, for example a Pro for Workstations key used for a standard Pro upgrade
- The licensing store is inconsistent after a previous failed upgrade attempt
Step 1: Check where the upgrade left the machine
A failed edition upgrade can leave Windows half-changed, which confuses later attempts.
- Press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter
- Note whether the edition changed or stayed the same
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and run slmgr /dli to see which licence Windows currently believes it has
If the edition changed but activation failed, you have Pro features running unactivated and only need to activate. If it did not change, the upgrade needs to be retried.
Step 2: Retry activation on its own
- Open Settings, System, Activation
- Expand Change product key and click Change
- Enter your upgrade key
- Click Next
Or from an administrator Command Prompt, run slmgr /ipk YOUR-KEY-HERE followed by slmgr /ato. The command line reports a more specific code if it fails again, and that code is the real problem.
Step 3: Clear the failed upgrade state
If a previous attempt left things inconsistent, reset the licensing state before retrying.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator
- slmgr /upk
- slmgr /cpky
- slmgr /rilc
- Restart the PC
- Enter the upgrade key again through Settings
Step 4: Rule out an exhausted key
If validation keeps failing and the network is fine, the key may already be in use. Run slmgr /dlv from an administrator Command Prompt and look at the remaining activation count.
A key with no remaining entitlement produces validation failures during upgrade just as it does during ordinary activation. Error 0xC004C008 covers that situation and what can be done about it.
Step 5: Repair the component store
Upgrades depend on a healthy component store. If it is damaged, packages fail to stage and validation can fail alongside.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator
- DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- sfc /scannow
- Restart and retry the upgrade
