Office 365 Lifetime Licence: What It Really Means and When Office 2024 Is the Better Buy

Short answer: Microsoft does not sell a lifetime version of Office 365. Microsoft 365 (the name Office 365 has carried for consumers since 2020) is a subscription billed monthly or yearly. "Office 365 lifetime" is a seller's term for an account created and managed by a third party, not a Microsoft licence type. If you want to pay once and own the right to use Office, the product Microsoft actually sells that way is a perpetual licence such as Office 2024 Professional Plus.

Is there a lifetime Office 365 licence?

No. Microsoft sells Microsoft 365 only as a subscription, and none of its consumer or business plans on the official Microsoft 365 plans page has a lifetime option. The one-time-purchase Office products Microsoft sells are the perpetual releases: Office 2024, Office LTSC 2024 and, until its support ends, Office 2021.

The confusion comes from language. In French and Italian searches especially, "licence Office 365 à vie" and "licenza Office 365 a vita" are extremely common, and many listings use the word lifetime for products that are really one of two different things.

What is an Office 365 lifetime account, then?

An Office 365 lifetime account is usually a work-or-school style Microsoft account created inside an organisation's Microsoft 365 environment, called a tenant, with a Microsoft 365 Apps licence assigned to it. You receive a sign-in like name@some-domain.onmicrosoft.com, install the Office apps with it, and pay the seller once.

The important detail is ownership. In any Microsoft 365 tenant, the tenant administrator controls every account: they can reset its password, reassign or remove its licence, read audit logs, and delete it. That is how Microsoft 365 is designed for businesses, and it applies to these accounts too.

So the word "lifetime" really describes the seller's promise to keep that account and its licence active. It is not a guarantee from Microsoft. How long it lasts depends on the seller and on the tenant it lives in.

The two products commonly sold as "lifetime"

• A managed Microsoft 365 account (described above). You get the full, continuously updated Microsoft 365 apps and usually OneDrive storage.
• A perpetual Office key described as lifetime. This is a genuine one-time licence for a fixed version, such as Office 2024 or Office 2021. "Lifetime" here means the licence doesn't expire, but the product still reaches end of support.

Before you buy anything labelled lifetime, check which of the two it is. The listing should say whether you receive an account or a product key.

Is an Office 365 lifetime account safe to use?

For general, non-sensitive work it can be a practical, low-cost option, but it is not the right choice for confidential data. Because the tenant administrator can technically access account activity and files stored in that tenant's OneDrive, you should treat the storage as someone else's server, not your own.

A common issue we see is buyers moving their entire document library into OneDrive on a third-party account, then losing access when the account changes. Keep your master copies on your own device or in storage you control.

Questions to ask any seller before buying

1. Do I get an account or a product key? This decides everything else.
2. Can I change the password and add my own recovery email? If not, you do not control the sign-in.
3. How much OneDrive storage is included, and is it guaranteed?
4. What happens if the account stops working? Look for a written replacement policy or warranty.
5. How many devices can I install on? Microsoft 365 Apps allow installation on multiple devices, with up to five signed in at the same time per user.

Which is better: an Office 365 lifetime account or Office 2024?

Choose Office 2024 if you want to pay once, keep full control and work offline; choose a lifetime Office 365 account if you mainly want the newest apps and cloud storage at low cost and your files are not sensitive. The deciding question is who you want to control access to your software.

How long does a perpetual "lifetime" Office licence actually last?

A perpetual Office licence never expires, but Microsoft supports each version for about five years. Office 2024 receives security updates until 9 October 2029, per the Office 2024 lifecycle page. After that date the apps keep working, but new vulnerabilities are no longer patched.

This is the advanced nuance most lifetime listings skip. Office 2016 had ten years of support; Office 2019, 2021 and 2024 have much shorter lifecycles. So "lifetime" is best read as "no renewal fees for the supported life of the product", which for Office 2024 is roughly five years from its October 2024 release.

How to check which Office licence you have

1. Open Word or Excel and go to File → Account.
2. Under Product Information, read the product name. "Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise" or "for business" means a Microsoft 365 account; "Office 2024" or "Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024" means a perpetual licence.
3. Check the Belongs to line. An address ending in onmicrosoft.com or a company domain shows the account is managed by an organisation.
