Microsoft ended support for Visio 2021 on 13 October 2026. Your diagrams still open and the app still runs, but Visio 2021 no longer receives security updates, bug fixes or technical help from Microsoft. This guide explains exactly what changed, how risky it is to keep using it, and the fastest ways to move to a supported version of Visio.
| Visio version | Lifecycle policy | End of support |
|---|---|---|
| Visio Standard 2021 and Visio Professional 2021 (retail) | Modern Lifecycle Policy | 13 October 2026 (ended) |
| Visio LTSC Standard 2021 and Visio LTSC Professional 2021 (volume) | Fixed Lifecycle Policy, no extended support | 13 October 2026 (ended) |
| Visio 2019 and Visio 2016 | Fixed Lifecycle Policy | 14 October 2025 (ended) |
| Visio 2024 and Visio LTSC 2024 | Modern / Fixed Lifecycle Policy | 9 October 2029 (supported) |
Dates come from Microsoft's list of products ending support in 2026, which places Visio 2021 alongside Office 2021, Project 2021 and the other 2021 desktop apps.
When did Visio 2021 support end?
Visio 2021 support ended on 13 October 2026 for every edition: the retail Visio Standard 2021 and Visio Professional 2021 retired under the Modern Lifecycle Policy, and the volume-licensed Visio LTSC Standard 2021 and Visio LTSC Professional 2021 reached their end of support under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy on the same day.
Unlike Visio 2016 and 2019, which had five years of mainstream support followed by five years of extended support, Visio 2021 had a single five-year support window. There was never an extended-support phase, so the end date arrived roughly five years after release in October 2021.
Microsoft confirmed the date repeatedly through its admin message centre during 2026, and the Visio 2021 lifecycle page lists the retirement date in Pacific Time.
Does Visio 2021 still work after end of support?
Yes, Visio 2021 keeps working after 13 October 2026. It stays activated, opens and saves .vsdx diagrams, and prints and exports as before. What stops is maintenance: Microsoft no longer releases security patches, bug fixes or time-zone and compatibility updates, and its support teams no longer help with Visio 2021 problems.
End of support is not a kill switch. Your licence remains valid, so you are still allowed to use the software you bought, and reinstalling it on the same PC with your key continues to work.
The change is gradual rather than sudden. On the first day nothing looks different, but each month of new vulnerabilities that stays unpatched makes the installation a little riskier, especially on PCs that open files from email or the web.
Is it safe to keep using Visio 2021?
Using Visio 2021 on an internet-connected PC becomes riskier every month after end of support, because any new vulnerability in Visio or its shared Office components will stay unpatched. Diagram files received by email are a common attack route, so continued use is only reasonable on isolated machines or for a short, planned transition.
- Security: Visio shares components with Office, and Office file formats are a frequent target for malicious attachments. After 13 October 2026, flaws found in Visio 2021 are not fixed.
- Compliance: security standards, audits and cyber-insurance questionnaires often ask whether all software is still vendor-supported. Unsupported Visio can count against you.
- Compatibility: future Windows 11 feature updates and newer versions of Office are not tested against Visio 2021, so display or add-in problems may appear and will not be fixed.
- Support: Microsoft will not troubleshoot Visio 2021 issues, so you rely on your own IT team or community forums.
What we commonly see is a business that upgrades Office on schedule but leaves one or two Visio 2021 installations behind on an architect's or engineer's PC. Those machines are often the ones handling sensitive network or facility diagrams, so they deserve the same attention as the rest of the estate.
Is there an Extended Security Update for Visio 2021?
No, Microsoft does not offer Extended Security Updates for Visio 2021, Visio LTSC 2021 or any other 2021 Office desktop app. The ESU programme covers products such as Windows 10 and certain Windows Server releases, not standalone Office, Visio or Project, so moving to a supported version is the only way to keep receiving security fixes.
Microsoft's guidance in its 2026 admin notices was to move to Visio 2024 or a Visio subscription before the deadline. If you are past the date already, the same advice applies: plan the switch now rather than waiting for a problem.
What are your options after Visio 2021 end of support?
You have four realistic options: buy Visio 2024 as a one-time purchase supported until 2029, subscribe to Visio Plan 2 for the always-updated desktop app, use Visio Plan 1 or the web app included with many Microsoft 365 business plans, or keep Visio 2021 only on an offline PC as a short-term stopgap.
| Option | Best for | Desktop app? | Supported until |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visio 2024 Standard or Professional (one-time purchase) | Individuals and small teams who want a desktop licence without renewals | Yes, Windows | 9 October 2029 |
| Visio Plan 2 (subscription) | Teams that want continuous updates and the desktop app on several PCs per user | Yes, Windows | While subscribed |
| Visio Plan 1 or Visio in Microsoft 365 (web) | Occasional diagrammers and Mac users working in a browser | No, web only | While subscribed |
| Keep Visio 2021 offline | Air-gapped or lab PCs while you plan the move | Yes, Windows | Unsupported |
Microsoft's Visio plans and pricing page lists the current subscription features. For most buyers who chose Visio 2021 because they wanted to own their licence, Visio 2024 is the like-for-like replacement.
What is the best replacement for Visio 2021?
For most people, Visio 2024 is the best replacement for Visio 2021 because it is the same type of product: a perpetual desktop licence for one Windows PC, bought once, with no subscription. It opens all your existing diagrams, adds newer shapes and the Office 2024 look, and Microsoft supports it until 9 October 2029.
Pick the edition that matches what you use today. If you had Visio Standard 2021 for flowcharts, org charts and office layouts, Visio 2024 Standard LTSC covers the same ground. If you had Professional 2021 for network, cloud, UML, BPMN or engineering diagrams, or linked shapes to live data, choose Visio 2024 Professional LTSC.

What changes from Visio 2021 to Visio 2024?
Visio 2024 keeps the same interface and .vsdx file format as Visio 2021, so there is little to relearn. It adds the refreshed Office 2024 visual theme, a search box in the title bar, new icons, sticky notes and infographic shapes, and in Professional, updated Azure, Kubernetes and Yourdon-Coad content, plus five more years of security updates.
| Area | Visio 2021 | Visio 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Support status | Ended 13 October 2026 | Supported until 9 October 2029 |
| File format | .vsdx | .vsdx (fully compatible) |
| Look and feel | Office 2021 theme | Office 2024 theme, title-bar search |
| New content | — | Icons, sticky notes, infographics; Azure and Kubernetes shapes in Professional |
| Licence | One PC, one-time purchase | One PC, one-time purchase |
Microsoft's Office LTSC 2024 overview, which covers Visio LTSC 2024, sets the minimum hardware at a 1.1 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 4 GB of free disk space and a 1280 × 768 display. The supported operating systems are Windows 11, Windows 11 LTSC 2024, Windows 10 LTSC 2021 and 2019, and Windows Server 2022 and 2025.
How do you upgrade from Visio 2021 to Visio 2024?
To upgrade from Visio 2021 to Visio 2024, back up your diagrams and custom stencils, uninstall Visio 2021, install Visio 2024 with the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture and update channel as your Office installation, then activate it with your new product key and confirm activation under File > Account.
-
Back up your work. Copy your .vsdx files and the
My Shapesfolder in Documents, which holds any custom stencils you created. - Check your Office installation. In Word or Excel, open File > Account > About and note whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit and which version you run. Visio must match.
- Uninstall Visio 2021. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Microsoft Visio 2021 and choose Uninstall. Your diagram files are not deleted.
- Install Visio 2024. Download it from Microsoft and install it with the matching architecture. Volume (LTSC) editions install with the Office Deployment Tool.
- Activate and verify. Enter your Visio 2024 key when prompted, then check that File > Account shows "Product Activated".
Version mixing is where most upgrades go wrong. Microsoft requires Visio and Office on the same PC to share the same update channel and bitness, so read our guide to installing Visio and Project alongside Office before you start. The full download and activation walkthrough is in our Visio 2024 Professional install guide.
Will Visio 2024 open my Visio 2021 diagrams?
Yes, Visio 2024 opens Visio 2021 diagrams without conversion because both versions use the same .vsdx, .vssx and .vstx formats. Shapes, layers, data links and custom stencils carry over unchanged, and diagrams you save in Visio 2024 can still be opened by colleagues who have not upgraded yet.
The one exception is new content. If you add a shape that exists only in Visio 2024, a Visio 2021 user can still view it, but cannot add more of that shape from their own stencils. Teams that edit the same diagrams should upgrade together to avoid that friction.
Frequently asked questions
Will Visio 2021 stop working after 13 October 2026?
No. Visio 2021 continues to open, edit and save diagrams after its end-of-support date, and your licence stays valid. It simply no longer receives security updates, bug fixes or Microsoft technical support, so the risk of using it on an internet-connected PC increases over time.
Can I still activate Visio 2021 after end of support?
In most cases yes. End of support does not switch off Microsoft's activation services for an existing licence, so reinstalling Visio 2021 with your key normally activates as before. However, Microsoft will not help if activation fails, which is another reason to plan a move to Visio 2024.
Is Visio 2024 a subscription?
No. Visio Standard 2024 and Visio Professional 2024 are one-time purchases for one Windows PC, activated with a product key and supported until 9 October 2029. They do not require a Microsoft 365 subscription. Visio Plan 1 and Visio Plan 2 are the separate subscription options.
When does Visio 2024 support end?
Microsoft supports Visio 2024 and Visio LTSC 2024 until 9 October 2029. Like Visio 2021, the 2024 release has a single five-year support window with no extended support, so you get security updates for the whole period and then need to plan the next upgrade.
Does Visio 2021 end of support affect Office 2021 and Project 2021?
Yes, all of them ended on the same day. Office 2021, Project 2021 and the other 2021 desktop apps reached end of support on 13 October 2026 together with Visio 2021, so it is efficient to upgrade them in one project. Our Project 2021 end of support guide covers the Project side.
