When Office activation fails, the hexadecimal code in the corner of the error dialog tells you far more than the message text. This reference lists the Office activation error codes Microsoft documents, what each one means and the fix that matches it. For general "Unlicensed Product" steps, see our separate guide to fixing Unlicensed Product in Office.
What are the most common Office activation error codes?
The Office activation codes Microsoft documents most often are 0xC004C060 (key no longer valid), 0x80070005 (access denied), 0x8004FC12 (activation failure after a Windows upgrade), 0xC004F200 (Windows not yet activated on a new PC), 0x8004FE33 (proxy authentication) and 0xC004F074 (KMS host cannot be used).
| Code | What it means | Where it appears | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0xC004C060 | Product key is no longer valid | Retail and one-time keys | Contact the seller for a replacement |
| 0x80070005 | Access denied, permission problem | Often after a Windows update | Run Office as administrator, update Office |
| 0x8004FC12 | Activation failed after Windows upgrade | Windows 10 upgrades | Install Windows updates |
| 0xC004F200 | Windows is not activated yet | Pre-installed Office on new PCs | Wait for Windows activation, then retry |
| 0x8004FE33 | Proxy needs authentication | MAK activation behind a proxy | Activate by phone |
| 0xC004F074 | KMS host could not be used or reached | Volume licensed Office with KMS | Check KMS host, DNS and network |
| 0xC004F050 | Product key is invalid | Typo or a key that does not match | Re-enter key, check edition |
Many codes beginning 0xC004 are reported by the Windows licensing service, the Software Protection Platform, which Office on Windows also relies on. That is why the same code can appear in both Windows and Office, and why some fixes overlap with our Windows troubleshooting guides.
How do I find the meaning of any Office error code?
Open Command Prompt as administrator, go to the Office16 folder and run cscript ospp.vbs /ddescr followed by the code, for example /ddescr:0xC004F074; Office then prints Microsoft's own description of that error, which is the quickest way to decode a code not listed in this guide.
- Run Command Prompt as administrator.
- Type
cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16"(use Program Files (x86) for 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows; some installs include a \root\ folder). - Run
cscript ospp.vbs /ddescr:0xC004F074, replacing the code with yours. - Run
cscript ospp.vbs /dhistoryacterrto see the failure history for MAK or retail activation.
Microsoft's ospp.vbs reference on Microsoft Learn lists every option. One nuance: ospp.vbs does not work for Microsoft 365 Apps or subscription Project and Visio, so subscription activation problems are handled through account sign-in instead.

What does error 0xC004C060 mean?
Error 0xC004C060 means Microsoft's activation servers report that your product key is no longer valid, usually because the key was blocked; Microsoft's support article says this often happens with keys obtained improperly, and the practical fix is to contact the seller for a replacement or refund rather than changing settings on your PC.
No local repair, reinstall or command can bring a blocked key back. Microsoft's article on error 0xC004C060 recommends asking the seller for a refund and reviewing its safer shopping advice.
What we commonly see is that this code appears on keys sold as "pre-activated" bundles or bought at auction-style marketplaces with no warranty. A seller that offers a key warranty and activation support gives you a route to a replacement. Our guide on buying discounted Windows and Office keys safely lists the warning signs.
How do I fix error 0x80070005 when activating Office?
Error 0x80070005 means access denied: Office could not complete activation because of a permission problem, which Microsoft says can follow a Windows update; fix it by updating Office, running an Office app as administrator and activating again, or by correcting registry permissions for the NETWORK SERVICE account as Microsoft describes.
- Update Office: File, Account, Update Options, Update Now.
- Close Office, right-click Word in the Start menu and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Reactivate if shown, or File, Account, Activate Product.
- For Microsoft 365, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter on Windows 10 or later.
If the error started straight after a Windows update, Microsoft's article on error 0x80070005 gives a registry permission fix for the S-1-5-20 key. Back up the registry before editing it, or ask a technician if you are not comfortable with regedit.
What do 0x8004FC12 and 0xC004F200 mean?
Both relate to Windows rather than the Office key: 0x8004FC12 appears when activating Office after upgrading to Windows 10 and is fixed mainly by installing the latest Windows updates, while 0xC004F200 appears when pre-installed Office is activated before Windows itself has finished activating on a new PC.
For 0x8004FC12, Microsoft's workaround, if you cannot update Windows straight away, is to run three commands from an elevated prompt and then restart: net localgroup Administrators localservice /add, fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\ and netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt. Run them one at a time.
For 0xC004F200, connect to the internet and check Settings, System, Activation. Microsoft notes that Windows activation can take up to 30 minutes; once it shows "Windows is activated", open Word and follow the Office activation prompts. If Windows activation itself fails, solve that first, because Office on that PC depends on it.
What do KMS errors like 0xC004F074 and 0x8007232B mean?
These are volume activation errors: 0xC004F074 means no Key Management Service host could be contacted or used, and 0x8007232B means the client cannot find KMS records in DNS; both occur on Office LTSC or volume editions in organisations, and a home PC showing them is likely set up for KMS activation it cannot reach.
For business networks, Microsoft's volume activation error code list advises checking the Application event log, DNS publishing of the KMS host and network connectivity. If no KMS host exists, Microsoft suggests installing a MAK instead and activating again.
Cause and effect matters here. A volume copy expects a corporate KMS host, so outside that network it cannot complete KMS activation. If you see these codes on a personal PC, the installation was probably made with volume media and a KMS setting, sometimes by an unofficial activator. Our guide to KMS activator risks explains why that is a problem.
What do 0xC004F050, 0xC004C008 and 0xC004C003 mean?
These codes describe a key the licensing service rejects: 0xC004F050 means the product key is invalid, often from a typo or a key for another edition; 0xC004C008 means the activation server determined the key could not be used; and 0xC004C003 means the activation server reports the key as blocked.
For 0xC004F050, re-enter the key carefully and confirm it matches the installed edition and channel. A Professional Plus 2024 volume key will not activate a retail Home and Business installation, as our guide to Office product IDs explains.
For 0xC004C008 and 0xC004C003, there is little to fix locally. If the key has reached its activation allowance, phone activation may help in genuine reinstall cases; otherwise contact the seller. Our Windows guide to error 0xC004C008 covers the same code from the Windows side.
What does 0x8004FE33 mean and when should I activate by phone?
Error 0x8004FE33 means MAK activation failed because your internet connection requires proxy authentication, and Microsoft's recommended fix is telephone activation; phone activation is also the standard fallback whenever a valid one-time or volume key is accepted but online activation is blocked by network restrictions.
Phone activation uses the installation ID shown by the activation wizard, or by cscript ospp.vbs /dinstid. You give it to Microsoft's automated system and enter the confirmation ID it returns, using /actcid if you work from the command line.
Our walkthrough on activating Office by phone shows each screen. If you bought your key from us, our keys include a 30-day warranty and activation help at support@licencehouse.com; include the exact code and the /dstatus output so we can help quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the Office activation error code?
The code usually appears in the lower corner of the activation dialog or the error message. If you missed it, run cscript ospp.vbs /act from the Office16 folder in an elevated Command Prompt; Office repeats the activation attempt and prints the error code if it fails, which you can then decode with /ddescr.
What does 0x8007000D mean for activation?
Microsoft documents 0x8007000D, "The data is invalid", for Windows activation, where it is linked to changed registry permissions under the Enum\Root key. We could not find Microsoft guidance specific to Office for this code, so decode it with ospp.vbs /ddescr and contact support with the full output.
Can an activation error damage my documents?
No. Activation errors affect the licence, not your files. While Office is not activated, editing is limited, but documents stay where they are and open normally once activation succeeds. Keep regular backups anyway, especially before editing the registry or reinstalling Office.
Do error codes differ between Office 2021 and Office 2024?
The codes are largely shared because Office 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024 use the same licensing platform and the same Office16 folder for ospp.vbs. The fix depends more on licence type, retail, volume or subscription, than on the Office version number itself.
Should I use the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter for every code?
Use it for Microsoft 365 subscription installs on Windows 10 or later, where Microsoft recommends it. For one-time-purchase and LTSC editions activated with a product key, the ospp.vbs commands, key checks and phone activation described in this guide are usually more direct.
